Three out of five UK women want to start a business, shows survey

According to a survey carried out by Avon, 60 per cent of women in the UK want to start up their own business.

The company surveyed 2,000 women and found that out of those who wish to start their own business, 45 per cent said that they have been held back because they feared that the process would be too complicated.

Manchester received over £136m in European funding, says research

Manchester has received over £136 million in European funding, which has supported investment in businesses and helped to create job opportunities, according to research from Britain Stronger in Europe.

The research found that during the 2007-2013 European Structural Funds Programme, which is made up of the European Regional Development Fund and the European Social Fund, Manchester received £136.2 million in European funding.

Family-run businesses in the UK are looking to expand after a successful year in the sector, according to research from the Institute for Family Business (IFB).

The research showed that family businesses make a significant contribution to the UK economy, making up 87 per cent of all private sector companies in the UK.

Sir Richard Branson has relaunched VOOM, a competition that gives entrepreneurs the chance to pitch ideas and win cash prizes.

Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to pitch ideas to a panel of experts, including Branson. Six businesses will be selected as winners and will share over £1 million in prizes.

ACCA and Big Four to launch apprenticeship tax scheme

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has teamed up with the Big Four to launch a new apprenticeship tax scheme.

The accountancy body will be working with KPMG, PwC, EY and Deloitte to develop a scheme for the audit, accountancy and tax professions. The scheme, known as Accountancy/Tax Technician Standard, will enable school leavers to qualify with a higher apprenticeship and is linked to the Government’s Trailblazer scheme.

ICAEW and PwC launch e-learning programme for accountants

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has partnered up with PwC to launch the ICAEW IPSAS Certificate, an online learning programme for public sector accountants.

The “practical and user friendly” programme will enable accountants to develop their skills, providing them with technical guidance, revision aids and practical examples. There are no entry requirements for the programme.

Young people have misconceptions about apprenticeships, reveals study

Young people have misconceptions about apprenticeships as a result of not receiving proper information from schools and colleges, according to a survey by Prudential.

The survey of 16 to 18 year olds showed that many school leavers avoid apprenticeships because they see them as low-paid, low-skilled jobs, when in fact they are highly beneficial.

Over 100 apprenticeships to go online for Apprenticeship Week

Over 100 apprenticeships are to go online this week in Leicester as part of Apprenticeship Week. Apprenticeship Week starts today and will run until Friday 18th March.

In addition to apprenticeship vacancies being offered, young people in the area will also have the opportunity to attend drop-in sessions. The events, which are being organised by the Leicester Apprenticeship Hub, will also include access points for information.

Amazon to create 1,000 new jobs at fulfilment centre

Amazon is to create new jobs by opening a fulfilment centre in North-West England. The centre, which is set to open later this year, will be located in Manchester and will create 1,000 jobs in the area over the next three years.

Amazon is planning to expand this year, creating 2,500 jobs across the UK. The online retailer’s new centre will join the company’s ten other fulfilment centres, which are located throughout the UK.

South West job market is thriving, reveals employment outlook survey

The job market in the South West is thriving, with more employers looking to hire in the region than in other areas of the country, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

The study, which surveyed 2,100 employers in the UK, was compiled to find out whether employers are planning to recruit additional employees or reduce the size of their workforce in the first quarter of the year.

Study reveals fastest growing tech start-ups in the North

The North of England’s fastest growing technology start-ups have been revealed by technology investment bank, GP Bullhound.

Manchester was found to have the highest number of companies on the list at 28 per cent, followed by 16 per cent in Yorkshire, 14 per cent in Newcastle, and the rest of the businesses located in areas such as Blackpool, Sunderland and Glasgow.

Women-led businesses major contributors to UK economy, shows study

Women-led businesses are the driving force of the UK economy, according to data compiled by Founders4Schools, a company that focuses on inspiring young people to set up their own business.

Figures from the open-government and LinkedIn data sets showed that the average annual turnover for businesses led by women is £11,719,080, more than the average business annual turnover of £11,284,634.

Graduates with work experience bring more value to a company, according to research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR).

AGR’s first annual development report surveyed 191 companies and found that graduates who started out as interns stayed with a company for six months longer than those who did not.

Demand for accountancy skills in Milton Keynes high, survey reveals

Salaries for part-qualified accountants are expected to rise in Milton Keynes, which could indicate a high demand for accountancy skills according to recruitment company Robert Walters.

A survey by the company showed that salaries are expected to increase by seven per cent for part-qualified accountants compared to four per cent for all accountants, whilst CIMA-qualified accountants will see an increase of ten per cent.

More employers offering flexible work to attract talented employees

Over 60 per cent of employers are now offering more flexible job roles in order to attract the best talent, according to research carried out by Totaljobs. Almost a quarter of the 4,000 British jobseekers and recruiters surveyed said that job flexibility is more important than salary and career opportunities.

Over 60 per cent of respondents said that the opportunity of working from home is crucial for job flexibility, whilst nearly half stated that job sharing offers more flexible working conditions.

Over 5,000 recruitment start-ups launched in the UK last year, according to research from Sonovate. 

The data comes after the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) found that turnover in the recruitment industry increased by 9.7 per cent to £31.5 billion in 2015.
